Whatever your baggage, your colors, your fight song, it's hard not to root these days for the University of Oregon, given how few institutions in this timid state have similar ambition.Those aspirations are most noticeable in the athletic department, where Phil Knight's money and marching orders have reshaped the track and football programs, rebuilt the athletic facilities and elevated UO to a national brand. ESPN's Colin Cowherd reported Thursday that only the University of Florida Gators are more popular than the Ducks among college-sports fans 17 years old and younger.
But a similar determination to play on a bigger stage is evident in the enrollment numbers and the school's marketing efforts. When UO President Richard Lariviere rises this afternoon to deliver his convocation address at Matthew Knight Arena , he will face what he has described as "the most diverse and smartest freshman class in our history."
