Credit unions see surge in mortgage activity Washington Post

About 70 percent of the mortgage applications NASA FCU received in the first three weeks of August are for refinancings, though White has seen a gradual increase in new purchase submissions as well.

Applications for new homes are also on the rise at OAS Staff Federal Credit Union in the District, said Carlos Calderon, president and chief executive. Nearly three quarters of the mortgage applications submitted to the credit union are for new homes.

Pending home sales in the Washington area were up 29.3 percent year over year in July, according to Real Estate Business Intelligence.

Before the latest dip in rates, OAS Staff grew its total mortgage portfolio by 25 percent. Calderon expects the portfolio to further expand in light of the influx of applications since the beginning of August.

Freddie Mac pegged the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage at 4.22 percent last week. Rates have hovered in the 4 percent range for past month, resulting in a 22 percent rise in applications in the first week of August, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. That level of interest has since abated as nationwide submissions dropped 2.4 percent for the week ending Aug. 19.

Answer by turg143I think the dealer was pulling one on you. Contact your bank for their latest interest rates. 12% interest for a car is really high.

I have a revolving Yamaha Credit Card...can I go to my credit union and refinance through them?

I have read a lot of bad reviews about this card, plus I like to do all my financing through my credit union im just concerened since this is sort of like a credit card, I am wondering if I can refinance the balance through my credit union.
It isnt a "credit card" its a revolving account, so its not like I am getting a loan to pay off a credit card, i owe money on a vehicle. Now im trying to find out if anyone knows if i can change lien holders to a credit union, so now they own my bike and i pay directly to them.

You can't get a loan from a bank just to pay off a credit card. How much do you owe?

You might want to consider applying for a credit card elsewhere that has a better rate. Some even offer 0% APR balance transfers (with a 3% fee).

If you don't want a credit card at all, stop using it while you pay off the balance. Then close it once the card has been paid off. (However, I don't recommend the closing of credit cards, unless you have too many. It can ding your credit rating, especially if you've had the card for a while).

depends on a lot of factors -- balance on credit card and how is your debt to credit ratio -- but in most cases if you prove you have been making the payment right along they will do this!!!

What credit union will refinance a car loan with credit score 570?

I am with Patelco credit union and you have practically jump thru hoops to do ANYTHING. I can't even get a check card without them runnin my credit report. My account is in good standing. Only reason I openned is to establish a relationship to get a loan, but if I can't get a check card what else can I do?

Normally with a score under 600 you will probably need to get money down on the car before they will give you a loan. Try getting at least 10% down on the car.

A website I've recommended in the past would be...

Take care.

Honestly your credit score its pretty bad, its highly unlikely anyone will refinance your loan. You typically refinance a loan to get a lower interest rate, with a 570 score nobody is likely to offer you a lower rate, you are paying a higher rate because you are considered a major credit risk. That's the reality, work on improving your score, wait until its about 650 before you try to refinance.

Did you try at other financial institutions such as WFB, WaMu, BoA etc..? I heard that banks are easier than CUs and they don't make their customers jump through hoops to get anything done.

Of course you can't get a credit card without them "runnin you credit report;" what do you expect?

Do you have to be a member of a Credit Union to refinance your car?

Trying to refinance my car loan with an interest rate of 21%.

If you want to refinance with them, yes you have to meet their membership requirements. Check with the CU to find out what they are. That is why they can offer such good rates, limited membership.

If you can't get in, there are other ways to refinance ... :)

Ouch.

If you want to do it through a credit union, then yes, you need membership there. If you qualify for membership, OPEN AN ACCOUNT NOW so that if you ever need anything like this again, you've been a member for years already.

You should sell the car. Then you can get a small loan at the bank or credit union to cover the difference. Save up and pay cash for you next new (used) car.

Yes you do have to have a membership for the credit union.. You have to be associated by a family member, job, school, location, etc. Just go in and ask to apply for membership. If you qualified, they usually ask for just $5 to open an account and ask about their car loan rates.. The rates in the credit union are more better than anywhere else. I refinanced my car at my credit union at 8%, before if was at 15%. It was alot better in payments :)

Ask the dealer if they use Centrix Financial. They are a sub-prime lender and assign the loan to a credit union. Remember that with a score of 570, you will still have a very high interest rate. Probably between 16-19%

Lee you already asked this question a couple of hours ago and stated that you were with H.S.B.C. at a 16% rate.

16% is not a bad rate for your score, you just need to keep making the payments until you have at least 12-18 made as agreed on your credit and you should have no problem refinancing at a lower rate.

And by the way Centrix is out of business. Has been for months.

Shop around for a refinance loan? SHould I? I found one with a credit union to refinance my car?

Loan for $10,125 interest at 8.25 and it will lower my payment by $70 but extend it 7 monthes.
I sure could use the extra $$ a month and will try to sell my car in a month for a cheaper car.

Should I shop around for a better interest rate?
Will it look bad on credit to have another bank pull my credit?

If you are planning to sell it for sure, don't refinance. But if you are cool keeping the car, then refinance it. It'll cost you less in the end to keep this car and pay it off than buying a whole new one.

That savings is great with very little an extension on the number of months. It sounds like a great deal to me. If you have your credit pulled within 2 weeks for the same purpose it doesn't count against you. But if you want to see other deals, I'd recommend a broker that will pull your credit once and send to multiple lenders.

If you're going to sell it, why try to refinance it?

When you want to refinance here is what you do:

Pull your OWN credit (since this doesn't count against you) and start heading out to credit unions (you did the right thing going to credit unions and not banks, by the way). Ask what rates they can offer you with your current score. Whoever is able to offer is the lowest rate is the one you should allow to officially pull your credit and do your refinancing with.

Yes, I would definitely shop around for a lower interest rate. 8.25% is pretty high. If you can get a lower one, do.

If you can't, then go with the 8.25%. Make sure you let the other credit unions know what this credit union has offered you (get the official 8.25% in writing) and ask them if they can beat it. Many times they'll drop it slightly lower just to get your business. You can always go back to the original credit union with the new offer and say "Why is this lower than your offer?" and see if THEY will in turn lower THIER interest rate.

Either way, always shop around. You never know what kind of deals you'll be able to find.

Best of luck.

GMAC financing wanting to refinance under my credit union?

I received a $2000 rebate from GMAC if I took their APR which is a little high. It was on a 2008 vehicle.

I would like to refinance with my credit union, but I want to know how long do I have to keep GMAC financing without breaching my contract, since I took their money. It does not say how long I have to stick with GMAC financing.

I am current on my payments to GMAC.

Any insight would be great.

More often than not all you have to do is finance with them make sure that there is no early pay off penalty by calling customer care. If they say no then you are good to go.

Do credit unions refinance student loans?

I have a little under $20,000 in student loans. I am trying to look for a bank or credit union that I can I guess "refinance" my loans with. The company that I pay only has a 10 year plan which makes my minimum payment near $300 a month. I am looking to extend my 10 year plan to 15 or 20 years so that it is more affordable for me now... and then later I can pay more as I move up in my career. Any suggestions?

Why don't you seek government student loans called Direct consolidation Loans which are financed by Government and have very flexible terms with a repayment of up to 30 years.
